Ending his three-month presidential campaign, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday night promised his supporters to do to the Philippines what he had done to Davao.
“There must be food on the table that is available and affordable… I promise you a comfortable life,” Duterte told the people at Luneta which according to the National Capital Regional Police Office swelled to 300, 000 at 7 p.m.
Duterte arrived shortly before 8 p.m. after the senatorial candidates in his slate—whistleblower Sandra Cam, former Interior Secretary Raffy Alunan, Greco Belgica, Dionisio Santiago, former Quezon City Representative Dante Liban, Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, former Metro Manila Development Authority Chair Francis Tolentino had delivered their speeches.
But Duterte has once again laced his speech with the threat to “kill everybody” who will exploit the ordinary people.
“Pag nagagalit ako sa mga ‘to. Papatayin ko talaga to (If I get furious at [oppressors], I will kill them),” Duterte said.
But in the same breath, he said the Philippines must be a peaceful nation. “You cannot build a country by killing people,” Duterte said in his two-hour long speech.
Duterte who in the last two weeks before the end of the campaign faced corruption accusation, told his supporters that he had never taken money from the people, “not even a single cent” in his 22 years in government.
“Wala akong transaction na pinakialaman. Wala akong kalokohan sa Davao (I didn’t meddle with any transaction. I have no frivolities done in Davao),” Duterte said.
While banking on his being an “ordinary citizen,” Duterte vowed to stake his life, honor and even the presidency in order to deliver real change to the lives of ordinary citizens.
“I am not your perfect option. But I am your last card. I promise you I will get down and dirty just to get things done. I will get things done. I will do it for the Filipino people,” Duterte said. TVJ
