Aquino welcomes SC decision on ARMM postponement

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino on Tuesday thanked the Supreme Court for upholding the constitutionality of the law postponing the August 8 elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and the appointment of caretaker officials who will run the region until the next elections in 2013.

“We thank the Supreme Court for upholding our effort to break the cycle of impunity, corruption and poverty in the ARMM,” Aquino said in a statement read by his spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.

“The Supreme Court decision gives us a great opportunity to correct these long-standing problems,” he added.
