After sugar gliders and spiders, prison authorities on Wednesday netted caged roosters aside from the contrabands inside New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
NBP Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf Jr. said they seized the caged roosters because they could pose a health hazard to the inmates.
Aside from the roosters, also seized during the 31st “Oplan Galugad” are cellular phones and chargers, imported liquor, air cooler, water dispenser, pieces of jewelry and knives.
The said items were recovered at Building 30 of the maximum security compound which housed inmates belonging to the Batang Cebu group.
Jail authorities also demolished a “kubol” also at the maximum security compound used by inmates of the Batang Mindanao group.
Schwarzkopf said his men also recovered a flat screen television set, a window-type air conditioning unit and several bicycles inside the kubol. The kubol also has a personal bathroom.
Still, Schwarzkopf said the number of prohibited items inside the national penitentiary is declining since they started “Oplan Galugad” last year.
“Malaki na ang ibinawas ng mga kontrabando dito sa loob at yung mga malalaking kontrabando sinisiguro namin na wala nang makakapasok though hindi natin masisiguro ay yung mga maliliit na kontrabando halimbawa mga cellular phones, mga parte ng baril o yung shabu,” he added.
(The number of contrabands inside [the NBP] has declined significantly and we ensure that huge contrabands would not enter the Bilibid athough we could not assure that small contrabands like cellular phones, gun parts o shabu would not enter the premises. )
Early this month, authorities seized domesticated sugar gliders, small marsupials in the same general family as a kangaroo or koala bear, and have been domestically bred as household pets in several countries, including the United States being kept as pets by inmates and gladiator spiders used for gambling.
