MANILA — The Ayala-led Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) on Monday refused to further comment on presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte’s alleged bank accounts, citing client confidentiality.
“Bank of the Philippine Islands will not make any comment as regards this morning’s discussion involving prominent politicians at our Julia Vargas, Pasig City branch. To do so would be against the basic banking principles of client confidentiality,” BPI said in a statement.
The bank vowed to continue “protecting client information and preserving the trust bestowed on us by our clients all these years.”
BPI last Friday denied it was the source of information on bank accounts, which vice presidential candidate, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, had alleged to belong to Duterte.
Duterte’s lawyer, Salvador Panelo, asked the BPI on Monday to issue a certification that at no time did Duterte have P211 million in his BPI account as alleged by Trillanes. The BPI said it would need a week to
