Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his eldest son agree that some things from the past should be left behind as part of history if the country wants to move forward.
During an INQ&A Live interview on Wednesday, Sandro Marcos said “too much politics” had been preventing the Philippines from achieving its full potential, when asked about the criticisms against his father and their family, particularly remarks from President Benigno Aquino III himself.
Asked about his family’s history dating back to his grandfather’s regime, the younger Marcos said it was “hard to comprehend” and “cannot be changed.”
“Having that amount of politically driven action within the administration, you block the opportunity for progress and action. That’s a lot of what my father is trying to say,” he said.
Asked about his ties with the relatives of his mother Liza Araneta, cousin of administration bet Mar Araneta Roxas, the senator’s son said politics should not get in the way of personal relationships.
“Friendship is always transcendent of politics,” he said, noting that some of his best friends are directly related to the Aranetas and Roxas, his uncle.
Roxas was endorsed by Aquino to be his successor.
For the senator’s part, he said he wanted to focus on what he can do to improve the lives of millions of Filipinos.
“I view all campaigns and elections as being about the future. Which future are you taking us to? That’s the kind of question voters are asking,” Marcos said. “I feel that I have many ideas that will help ordinary Filipinos. That’s the kind of discussion that we should be having—who has the best ideas?”
“After the election, I hope that we can all put everything behind us and focus on the future,” he added. RC
