Poe OKs house arrest for Arroyo, but not hero’s burial for Marcos

FAST TALK: Grace Poe

While she is open to house arrest for her father’s foe, Sen. Grace Poe is standing firm against a hero’s burial for a dictator.

Asked during the “fast talk” segment of the presidential debate if former president and now detained Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should be put under house arrest, Poe said she would not block it if the court would grant such a request.

“If the doctor says yes, I won’t stop it,” Poe said on Sunday at the third and final debate at University of Pangasinan in Dagupan City.

Arroyo defeated the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. in the 2004 presidential race.

The former president is under hospital arrest while on trial for plunder.

Poe was firm, however, against allowing the late dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, from being buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani.

“Whatever my opinion is, I just want to say, the law does not allow it. [Republic Act No.] 10368 states that those who sacrificed during [Marcos’] term should be recognized,” Poe said.

RA 10368 recognizes and provides reparations to victims of human rights abuses during martial law. RC
