5 students fall into ravine while taking selfie

PETALING JAYA — Five university students were spared their lives, but not their blushes, when they fell into a 24-meter deep ravine while taking selfies.

Fortunately, none of them were badly hurt in the incident, which took place at the Keluang Hill in Kuala Besut on Wednesday.

The five, all from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), were on a hiking trip with 20 other students when they stopped for some selfies. Instead, they ended up slipping and tumbling 24 meters down.

Besut Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Mohd Zailani Abdullah said they received a call from a member of the public at 1:15 p.m., and five firemen from the Kampung raja fire stations rushed over to the scene.

“Until this evening, two of the students, a male and a female, have been successfully brought up. The department is still trying to hoist up the remaining three students.

“The deep ravine is hampering rescue work,” he said in a statement posted on the Fire and Rescue Department’s Facebook page.

Selfie-related accidents are on the rise, with 27 people dying from such incidents around the world last year.
