USC booters to vie in UniGames

Inspired by their heart-stopping, sudden death victory last Sunday in the collegiate football finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), the University of San Carlos (USC) hope to extend their lucky run to this year’s University Games slated from Oct. 22-29 in Roxas City, Capiz.

USC head coach Gary Panagsagan said they want to capitalize on their gripping win which ended a five-year title drought in the Cesafi and hope to repeat their feat in 2006 wherein after winning the Cesafi title they also made the quarterfinal round in the men’s football event of the UniGames.

Panagsagan said their participation in the UniGames is also part of their preparation for the Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) regional meet in Bohol early next year.

This is the third time that the Kicking Warriors will be playing in the UniGames. After 2006, USC also sent a team in 2007 but the squad was booted out in the eliminations.

Panagsagan said that their aim this year is to get to the semifinal round.

Last year, USC’s women’s team made it all the way to the semifinals.

Panagsagan said that for the last two years, the Lady Warriors advanced to the top 4, but never with the crown.

However, Panagsagan said USC will not be sending a women’s team because most of the team members have already graduated.

With newbies mostly manning the team, Panagsagan said they are not yet ready for the UniGames.

The team will be leaving Friday night for Capiz along with the volleyball men and women’s teams and the swimming squad.
