THE TRADITION of debating in verse is called Balagtasan in honor of  renowned Filipino poet, Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar. Born on April 2, 1788, he wrote hundreds of poems and plays, among them the famous “Florante at Laura.”  The first Balagtasan was held April 6, 1924, to mark his birth anniversary.  Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
