Philippine politicians should stop the “politics of vengeance” and unify the Filipino people to move the country forward, a former senator said Tuesday.
“The next leader of this country must not pursue a politics of vengeance,” former Sen. Edgardo Angara said in a forum at the Kamuning Bakery.
For the past decades, Angara said the setup of Philippine politics has been a “politics of vengeance.”
“It is a surprise that we have survived that kind of politics,” Angara told reporters during his book signing at the famous pugon-style bakery.
He said the next Philippine President should “concentrate in moving the country forward.”
The former lawmaker said 2016 is a “critical year” for the Philippines, citing the crucial role of the country’s next president.
“The next leader is critical for our progress,” he said, pointing to the role of the Philippines in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) economic integration.
But Angara said the public has not “heard enough” from our presidential candidates.
“We have not heard enough from each of the applicants,” he said, adding that the presidential aspirants are now in the application process for the country’s highest elective post.
Asked by reporters if he is inclined to endorse any candidate, Angara remained mum about his choice but said he would announce his preferred candidates days before the May 9 elections. CDG
