CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Fifteen men volunteered to be crucified on Good Friday, many of them repeating a ritual they have undertaken as an expression of penance in Central Luzon.
In San Pedro Cutud village, veteran Ruben Enaje spent 11 minutes nailed to the cross, instead of the conventional 5 minutes, on his 30th time to undergo the ritual, said Ching Pangilinan, city tourism officer.
Aside from Enaje, San Pedro Cutud also witnessed the crucifixion of Ronald Lazaro, Crisaldo Macaspac, Bernardo Calosa, Ramil Lazaro, Victor Caparas and Byron “Bobby” Gopez who came from Quezon province.
The rituals were started in Santa Lucia village, followed by San Juan village.
Crucified in Barangay (village) San Juan were Wilfredo Salvador (on his 10th year) and Alex Viray (on his eighth year). Meanwhile, Barangay Santa Lucia witnessed the crucifixion of Melchor Montoya, Danilo Ramos and Fernando Mamangun.
In Angeles City, nailed to the cross in Barangay Lourdes North West were Rey Sabangan, Erwin Lumacang and Angelito Mengilla. RAM
