Police have arrested more than two thousand individuals for violating the election gun ban, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday.
Police Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, said a total of 2,377 were arrested while over one thousand firearms were recovered or surrendered as of Thursday.
Mayor said 2,287 of the 2,377 arrested individuals were civilians, 19 were PNP personnel, 13 were from Armed Forces of the Philippines, 1 was from Bureau of Fire Protection, 16 were government or elected officials, 30 were security guards, 2 were from Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit, 5 were from other law enforcement agencies, 1 was from a threat group and 3 were from partisan armed groups.
Over one thousand deadly weapons were confiscated. Of these, 597 were handgun pistols, 549 were handgun revolvers, 95 were rifles and 96 were shotguns.
The Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) gun ban started last January 9 and would last until June 8.
The gun ban was in compliance with the poll body’s Resolution No. 10015, which prohibits anyone except for the military and the police personnel from bearing, carrying and transporting firearms and other deadly weapons. RAM
