Comelec eyes starting May 9 polls at 6 a.m.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) plans to begin the voting hours an hour earlier than originally scheduled in order to accommodate the printing of voter verification receipts.

Comelec commissioner Christian Lim, speaking at the hearing of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on the Automated Election System, said the new proposed voting hours are 6 am to 5 pm, instead of 7 am to 5 pm.

But Lim said it would be up to the Comelec en banc to approve the new hours.

Comelec chair Andres Bautista said the Comelec proposed these new voting hours in order to maximize daylight.

The poll body wants the voting completed before it gets dark.

Committee chair Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III said the Comelec should ensure the new voting hours are widely disseminated
