Cop in Bohol town arrested for firing gun while intoxicated

BATUAN, Bohol — A policeman in this town was arrested to face investigation for indiscriminately firing his gun inside the police station while heavily drunk on Monday night.

PO2 Jeuvany Alberto Unajan of Batuan Police Station (BPS) was detained at the police station in nearby Carmen town to face both administrative and criminal investigation.

Insp. Narciso Valmores Laruga, Batuan police chief, said Unajan was heavily intoxicated when he went to the police station about 8 p.m.

Unajan went to the second floor of the police station, which serves as sleeping quarters and saw PO3 Jonathan Ancog who was resting after conducting a check-point.

Laruga said Unajan pointed his pistol at Ancog and asked, “Do you want to live?”

Surprised, Ancog raised his hands and asked Unajan what seemed to be the problem.

Laruga, who was in his room at that time, heard the commotion and rushed to the quarters.

He reprimanded Unajan but the latter fired his gun. The police chief rushed back to his room to get his gun and slammed the door.

The sound made Unajan turn his head towards the door, giving Ancog the opportunity to run to the third floor.

Unajan thought that Ancog was hiding inside the quarters and fired his gun, using his .45 caliber pistol. Then, he got his M16 rifle and fired again.

Those who were playing tennis three meters from the police station heard the firing and were terrified.

At least 10 empty shells of .45 caliber pistol and M16 rifle were recovered in the area, said Laruga.

Unajan went outside the station and walked to a house in Barangay Poblacion where he again fired his gun, terrorizing the residents.

His wife and daughter then arrived to stop him and brought him home to Carmen town, about 9 km from Batuan.

Personnel from the Bohol Provincial Police Office and from Carmen police station went to his house and arrested him.

Unajan surrendered and was detained at the Carmen Police Station.

Supt. Ricky Delilis, BPPO spokesperson, said he would suggest to Supt. Dennis Agustin, Bohol police provincial director, that the policemen undergo counseling on stress and anger management.

“We must conduct counseling to prevent incidents such as this,” he said. JE
