Guard shoots man at Mandaue shipyard

A SECURITY guard shot and wounded a man whom he suspected of stealing scrap metals at a shipyard in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City, yesterday morning.

Artemio Papa, 23, a native of Leyte, was arrested after the incident.

Papa is employed by the Fabulous Security Agency assigned at the shipyard of Roble Shipping at FF Cruz.

The victim, Jovet Abejo, 19, was wounded in the body. He was brought by his companions to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC)

Based on police investigation, Papa was on duty when he saw two pumpboats dock at the shipyard around 9 a.m.

Abejo was with Relie Abano, 20, in a pumpboat while their two friends rode on a separate pumpboat.

Papa fired a warning shot using a shotgun when he saw the two men allegedly taking scarp metals from the shipyard, said SPO1 Dionisio dela Peña, homicide investigator of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO).

The four men ignored the warning shot.

Papa told police that he shot Abejo when he saw him swim to the shipyard and took metal scrap.

Abejo’s friends fished him out of the waters and rushed him to the hospital.

Papa was arrested at 2 p.m. but his service firearm was not recovered.
