Hot, humid days of summer here

/ 05:14 AM March 20, 2016

Expect hotter and more humid days ahead as the dry season has officially kicked in, the weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the start of summer on Friday as signified by the prevailing easterly winds associated with warm and dry conditions.

“The day-to-day weather will gradually become warmer and drier in the coming weeks, while humid conditions are expected by May,” Pagasa acting administrator Vicente Malano said in a statement.

“However, some isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon or evening, particularly in the eastern section, due to localized convection,” Malano said. Convection refers to the rise of hot air.

Pagasa earlier advised the public to take precautionary measures to minimize heat stress.

The heat index in Metro Manila was projected at 35 to 36 degrees over the weekend, which calls for extreme caution as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible. Continuing activity could result in heat stroke.

Pagasa reminded the public to drink plenty of water regularly and eat small meals often. Light colored clothing is recommended to reflect the sun’s rays.

The strong El Niño is still affecting the entire country and may significantly result in reduced rainfall and warmer air temperatures, especially over the western section of Mindanao, Pagasa said. Erika Sauler
