A German Shepherd who was presumed dead after falling off a boat five weeks ago has been found alive on an island Navy base in California.

According to reports from TIME magazine’s website time.com, the one-year-old dog named Luna was with her owner Nick Haworth on a fishing trip last February when she fell overboard about two miles off San Clemente, a Naval island in San Diego.

Haworth, with the help of the US Navy, scoured the coast of San Diego in hopes of retrieving his missing pet.

Their efforts, however, were unsuccessful and Luna was eventually presumed dead after days of searching.

But on Tuesday, the brave canine was miraculously discovered by navy personnel on San Clemente.

Sandy Demunnik, a Naval public officer, recalled her shock upon seeing Luna near their home base on Tuesday morning.

“We just saw her sitting on the side of the road wagging her tail,” said DeMunnik. “

“Keep in mind there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight,” added the Navy official.

Luna is believed to have swum ashore and survived by eating mice on the island.

San Diego Zoo wildlife biologists examined Luna and found her “perfectly healthy other than being a little undernourished.”

Luna’s owner Haworth is currently traveling for a work trip, but will be reunited with his pet in the near future.
