WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A gunman suspected of shooting and wounding four police officers was holed up at a rural New Zealand house on Wednesday evening, police said.
Deputy Police Commissioner Mike Clement said police had surrounded a house near the North Island town of Rotorua after a suspect earlier shot officers during two incidents.
Clement said a suspect had shot at a plane during the morning when police were using aircraft in the area for a marijuana operation.
Clement said that as officers moved in to arrest the man he shot three of them. One suffered serious wounds and all three were in a stable condition at area hospitals.
He said a fourth officer was later shot in the hand but his injuries weren’t believed to be serious.
