Hundreds of professors of the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday condemned Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for his “willful distortion of history” and his continuous denial of the abuses committed during the regime of his late father.

“We deplore the shameless refusal to acknowledge the crimes of the martial law regime,” 412 Ateneo faculty members said in a joint statement slamming the vice presidential contender. “We reject the revision of history, disturbing vision of the future… being presented by Marcos Jr.”

The professors also debunked claims by loyalists that the Philippine economy reached its peak during the late dictator’s rule, noting that the elder Marcos was mainly concerned with holding on to power.

“We believe that… Marcos simply created new elites or ‘oligarchs.’ Those who dared challenge the regime’s monopoly on power… were intimidated, imprisoned, kidnapped, tortured or summarily executed,” they added.
