The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing 76 percent of Filipinos satisfied with the way democracy works validates how people appreciate the fruits of the People Power Revolution 30 years ago.

“Such overwhelming approval shows the Filipinos’ deep appreciation for democracy as a way of life,” Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. said in a statement.

Coloma said the positive results of the survey “comes as a timely and fitting tribute to the Filipinos on the 30th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution.”

“Filipinos cherish and uphold democracy as they disdain the oppression and tyranny of the dictatorship,” he said.

The survey, conducted from December 5 to 8, revealed that about 76 percent or three in four Filipinos expressed satisfaction on how democracy works in the Philippines.

The respondents answered the question: “On the whole, are you (very satisfied; fairly satisfied; not very satisfied; not at all satisfied) with the way democracy works in the Philippines?”

SWS said that satisfaction with democracy has always been higher than 60 percent since June 2010, the time when President Benigno Aquino III took office.

Satisfaction with democracy reached a record-high of 80 percent in June 2013.

The survey also showed that 58 percent of the 1,200 respondents prefer democracy than any other form of government. IDL
