Binay: No to death penalty

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Vice President Jejomar Binay on Sunday said he does not support the death penalty, saying taking someone’s life is only up to God.

During the presidential debates here, Binay made the statement when asked if he would bring back death penalty in the country to resolve the prevalence of drugs in the country.

Binay attributed the problem of drugs in the country to poor leadership and law enforcement.

He also lamented that only a few of the cases against drug lords have been resolved.

“Ang problema diyan, mahina ang enforcement. Nandyan po ang illegal drug syndicates. Anong nagagawa? Wala masyadong nahahabla, kung may nahahabla naman, walang nangyayari. Hindi effective, hindi decisive ang leadership,” Binay said.

Binay said when he was Makati mayor, he would sit down with officials to ask for updates on cases against alleged drug lords.

As for death penalty, Binay said it is only God who can take someone’s life away.

“Hindi po ako naniniwala sa death penalty. Trabaho ng Diyos yan. Hindi dapat natin gawin yan,” Binay said.

Death penalty was abolished in the country in 2006 when former president now Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo signed a law abolishing capital punishment.
