Duterte: ‘Without peace, we cannot develop as a nation’

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – Presidential bet Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte vowed to bring back peace and order in the Philippines if elected president in the May national elections.

“Without peace, we cannot develop as a nation,” Duterte said during his closing speech at the presidential debate at the Capitol University here.

The feisty mayor said the Philippines has been plagued with criminality, illegal drugs and corruption in government.

“There’s so much corruption, crime and drugs in the country. I will stop it,” he said.

Before deciding to run for president, Duterte repeatedly said he won’t seek the presidency.

“I am here because I love our country,” he said.

Duterte vowed to stop the criminality and illegal trade of drugs within first three to six months in office if elected president.

“I will do it even if I lose my life, honor and position,” he said.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Duterte said the time limit didn’t allow him to explain his platform of government well.

“It does not serve the purpose at all. Let the people judge,” he said.
