Binay says properties from hard work, inheritance

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines—Despite claims that he hailed from the poor, Vice President Jejomar Binay on Sunday said that he got his properties not only through hard work but also through inheritance.

Binay made the statement during the Commission on Elections (Comelec) presidential debate here when asked about his wealth.

Host Mike Enriquez asked Binay about his statement that he got his wealth through inheritance.

(Threee decades is such a long period. But I don’t remember that my properties were all through inheritance. We bought some of our properties and we have the capacity to do so.)

(It is not true that I have many properties, I got them either through inheritance or purchase. These (properties) were not only from my mother but also from my father.)

Asked by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago if Binay got his properties before or during his almost two-decade rule as Makati mayor, Binay said he got these properties during his stint as a lawyer and with the help of his wife Elenita Binay, who is a doctor.

(I was elected and I served in 1986 and before I served in public office, I practiced law and my wife practiced being a doctor.)

(I will repeat, I inherited my properties before I served in served in public office.) RAM
