VICE President Jejomar Binay defended his senatorial candidate Manny Pacquiao from the social media backlash over the boxing icon’s statement comparing gays to animals.
In an interview in Cebu where Binay attended a meeting with partymates from the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), Binay said the public should understand the background of Pacquiao as a born-again pastor.
“Tanong niyo na lang kung anong explanation ni Cong. Pacquiao. Pero we have to go back who is Manny Pacquiao now. Maka-Diyos na maka-Diyos si Manny Pacquiao,” Binay said.
Asked about his position on same sex marriage, Binay said he is against it.
“On my part, I will abide and follow the position of the Church,” Binay said.
Pacquiao has drawn flak from social media for his statement where he said gays are worse off than animals.
He made this statement when asked if he supports same sex marriage during the TV-5 group interview with him for its “Bilang Pilipino” elections coverage.
Pacquiao was criticized by LGBT personalities, among them Vice Ganda who called him a false prophet and Ladlad founder Danton Remoto who said Pacquiao is a “numbskull” for not thinking that even animals exhibit homosexual behavior.
Hollywood celebrity blogger Perez Hilton in his blog called Pacquiao’s statement “barbaric.”
“Common sense lang. Makakakita ka ba ng any animals na lalaki sa lalaki, babae sa babae? Mas mabuti pa yung hayop. Marunong kumilala kung lalaki, lalaki, o babae, babae,” Pacquiao said.
“Kung lalaki sa lalaki, babae sa babae, eh mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao,” the boxer added.
