The remains of OFW Family Club party-list representative Roy Señeres Sr. have been laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City on Sunday.
The interment was scheduled at 8 a.m., according to Señeres’ son and namesake Roy Jr.
Señeres died of cardiopulmonary arrest due to complications brought by diabetes three days after he withdrew his candidacy for president.
He was 68.
The lawmaker previously served as the country’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and as chairman of the National Labor Relations Commission.
The family of Señeres wanted to remove his name from the ballot for the upcoming elections.
But his party, the Partido ng Magsasaka at Manggagawa, fielded a substitute candidate, Atty. Apolonia Soguilon, who was earlier declared by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as a “nuisance” candidate.
On the poll body’s side, Comelec Chair Andres Bautista said that they would not allow Soguilon’s substitution as she does not have the surname Señeres.
Section 19 of Comelec Resolution No. 9984 states that a substitute of a candidate who died or is disqualified may file a COC up to mid-day of May 9, the day of the elections.
However, the resolution said that the substitute should have the same surname with the candidate being substituted.
