Today, Feb. 11, is the 103rd birth anniversary of National Artist for Music Lucio San Pedro. Among the valuable contributions of San Pedro to original Filipino music are his compositions “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” and “Lahing Kayumanggi.” Aside from being a composer, San Pedro was also a notable educator. He taught composition at the University of the Philippines College of Music and served as chair of its Composition and Conducting Department from 1970 to 1973. He was awarded the title National Artist in 1991. San Pedro died in 2002 at the age of 89. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
