BATANGAS CITY—A jail guard was killed while a policeman was critically wounded when they were both shot by three inmates escaping from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology detention center in Barangay (village) 4, Balayan, Batangas province predawn on Saturday, police said.
Chief Inspector Salvador Solana, Balayan police chief, identified the fatality as Senior Jail Officer 1 Leonardo De Castro and the wounded policeman as Police Officer 3 Roderick Reyes.
Prisoners Ajie Mendoza, Marvin Seralbo and Jessie Pega were caught by Solana while they were attempting to bolt the jail around 2:10 a.m. However, the three inmates overpowered the jail guard, took his gun and shot him in the head, said Solana.
During the escape, the said inmates chanced upon Reyes and shot him several times.
Both victims were rushed to the Madonna General Hospital at the town proper, however, De Castro was pronounced dead on arrival. Reyes remained in critical condition, said Solana.
