More than 50 houses razed by fire in Mandaue City

CEBU CITY—At least 55 houses were damaged on Friday afternoon when fire hit a residential area in two villages in Mandaue City, Cebu.

Mandaue City fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out in Sitio Sapa-Sapa in Barangay (village) Ibabao in Mandaue at 2:25 p.m.

The fire later spread to houses, mostly made of light materials, located on the other side of the river in the neighboring sitio of Sto. Niño in Barangay Guizo.

The fire was controlled after 35 minutes.

At least 11 fire trucks from the Mandaue City fire department and from neighboring Local Government Units (LGUs) responded to the alarm.

Two persons were declared missing by relatives.  But Narcisa Arsenal and Jessa Mae Prada were later found after the commotion caused by the fire started to subside.

Ibabao barangay captain Jun del Mar said the fire damaged 50 houses in his village.

The affected families were housed at the multi-purpose gym and on a vacant lot located close to the fire site.

At least five houses were also damaged in Sitio Sto. Niño, said village chief Jesus Neri.
