TODAY, Jan. 29, is the 97th birth anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Francisco V. Coching. Born in 1919, Coching is acknowledged as the “dean of Filipino illustrators,” a master storyteller and central force in the formation of the popular art form of comics. He was part of the golden age of Filipino comics in the 1950s and 1960s. Coching died on Sept. 1, 1998 and was named a National Artist in 2014.
