Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, who are currently in the Philippines for a five-day state visit, shared memories of their travel to Baguio and Tagaytay in 1962 to President Benigno Aquino III during their meeting at Malacañang yesterday.
The Japanese imperial couple first visited the country in 1962 when they were still crown prince and princess as representatives of Emperor Hirohito.
In these photos provided by Anjo Mendoza to the Inquirer, whose wife’s grandfather Norberto F. de Guzman was the mayor of Baguio at the time, the couple was seen being welcomed by the mayor and his wife as then Crown Prince Akihito received the keys to the city.
