Nenita “Nenet” dela Paz recently underwent an operation for abdominal hernia due to myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition characterized by inadequate blood cells and low blood count because the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged.

However, Nenet, who remains confined at the Divine Grace Medical Center in General Trias, Cavite province, needs to undergo another surgery. She and her husband, Rafael dela Paz, have been told to prepare at least P500,000 for the procedure.

“The surgeon told us that it is a high-risk operation. She may lose her white blood cells which are responsible for protecting the body from infections. She would have to be placed in the intensive care unit afterward,” Rafael told the Inquirer.

“The damaged portion of her colon will be removed during the operation. When it has healed, when the swelling has subsided, that’s the only time it will be reconnected,” he said.

Rafael used to work for a shipping company until his retirement. He has not been able to find another job since, making him and his wife dependent on the allowance they get from their two sons who have families of their own.

Aside from looking after his wife, Rafael has been caring for their daughter who has a disability. Nenet was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome last October.

Aside from donations, Rafael is also asking Inquirer readers for prayers for his wife. He can be reached at 0915-7430971 or (046)4385291. Donors can deposit any amount in Nenita dela Paz’s BDO savings account (#0084300220654).  Santiago R. Alcantara
