CABANATUAN CITY — Five suspected car thieves were killed before dawn Monday when they tried to crash through a police checkpoint in the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.

Police said that before the incident they were alerted about the theft of a tricycle in Talavera town.

At about 3 a.m., five men aboard a tricycle and a motorcycle tried to plow through a police checkpoint set up at the start of a Comelec gun ban in Barangay (village) Sapang Cauayan.

One of the men opened fire at the police triggering a gunbattle that left the five men dead, police said.

Probers believe that that tricycle used by the fatalities was the one stolen from Macario de la Cruz.
Recovered from the crime scene were five 38-caliber revolvers. CB
