The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has removed the names of more than 2 million Filipinos from the official list of voters in the upcoming May national elections for failing to register their biometrics data.
According to a report by Radyo Inquirer, the total number of registered voters was set at 54.36 million after 2,284,758 voters have been removed from the Comelec’s list.
Majority of the delisted voters were from Metro Manila, Davao del Sur, and Cavite.
The number of voters in Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, and Maguindanao was not affected.
Under the Comelec’s “No Bio, No Boto” policy, anchored on the Mandatory Biometrics Registration Law of 2013, voters without biometrics data will not be allowed to vote.
The policy was temporarily stopped by the Supreme Court last December following a petition by the Kabataan party-list, but its implementation was eventually upheld on the Comelec’s appeal.
