Man nabbed for suspected violation of election gun ban in Digos City

DIGOS CITY—Police authorities here arrested one of two men riding in tandem last Monday evening for alleged violation of the election gun ban.

Supt. Querubin Manalang, the city police chief, identified on Tuesday the arrested suspect as Romeo Violon, 42, a resident of Barangay (village) Balutakay in nearby Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.

However, Violon’s back rider, later identified as Raul Campo, managed to elude arrest after running towards a grassy portion of the Balutakay-San Jose highway.

Manalang said policemen manning a Commission on Elections checkpoint at the corner of the said highway took notice of the two men, who had no helmets around 9 p.m.

He said Violon, who was driving the motorcycle slowed down and attempted but failed to do a U-turn after his motorcycle conked out. Campo, he said, disembarked and immediately ran.

Manalang said when frisked, Violon yielded a .45 caliber pistol with eight live ammunition and two more magazines with ammunition.

He said Violon failed to present any valid document for the firearms he was carrying.

Manalang said Violon was still being investigated to determine why he was carrying a firearm and is now being locked up at the police’s jail as charges for violations of the election gun ban and illegal possession of firearms were being prepared against him. RAM
