Ambush kills pedicab driver, baby in his arms

A 25-YEAR-OLD pedicab driver was shot dead in a street ambush that also killed his infant daughter and wounded a bystander in Malabon City on Wednesday night.

The Malabon police said Ernesto Serrano was carrying his 1-month-old daughter Princess Ayesha in front of Tugatog National High School on P. Concepcion Street, when he saw the two gunmen approaching.

Serrano ran but was cornered on Dr. Lascano, where he was shot several times while the child was still in his arms.

Princess Ayesha was also hit in the chest, while a stray bullet hit the right hand of Alfredo Reyes, another pedicab driver who was nearby.

Serrano died on the spot, the baby girl was pronounced dead on arrival at Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon, while Reyes remained at Tondo Medical Center on Thursday.

According to SPO3 Benedicto Zafra, the case investigator, the slain Serrano was later found carrying seven plastic sachets believed to contain “shabu.”

Quoting residents in the area, Zafra said Serrano was being linked to the killing of Norberto Sabarillo, 32, on Jan. 12 or a day before the attack. Like Serrano, Sabarillo was killed on Dr. Lascano Street.
