On Jan. 13, 1865, the Spanish government established a National Treasury of the Philippines. But the first Filipino national treasurer was Baldomero Aguinaldo, who was appointed by President Emilio Aguinaldo in 1897. In 1900, the Philippine Commission headed by William H. Taft created the Bureau of Insular Treasury, the predecessor of the current Bureau of the Treasury. The bureau currently holds office at the Palacio del Gobernador building in Intramuros, Manila.
