The Feast of the Black Nazarene is celebrated every Jan. 9 as a commemoration of the transfer (traslacion) of the statue of a dark-colored Christ from a Recollect church in Intramuros, Manila, where it was first enshrined, to St. John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, in 1787. During the yearly procession, the life-sized image of Christ is placed in a “carroza” pulled by two 50-meter “abaca” ropes and brought to various barangays in the Quiapo District before it is returned to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene. Last year, around five million devotees joined the procession that lasted 19 hours. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
