PNP recalls politicians’ security details ahead of election period

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has started recalling some 800 security details of politicians and private individuals to prevent law enforcers from being influenced by politics ahead of the upcoming national elections.

This was in compliance to the Commission on Elections resolution no. 8714 ordering the recall of security escorts from the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines and other government agencies to poll candidates 120 before the actual election day.

“Starting January 10 up to June 8, which is the election period, all security personnel provided for (politicians) and private individuals will be revoked,” Police Security Protection Group (PSPG) head Chief Supt. Alfred Corpus said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

There are at least 800 security details from 891 protectees who are expected to report back to the PSPG office next Monday, January 11.

Corpus said they have informed last December 10 the officials seeking reelection and other VIPs that they will recall security personnel before January 10.

If individuals would want to retain their escorts, Corpus said they will have to secure a permit from the Comelec.

“Who[ever] wants to be secured should now be asking authority from the Comelec starting January 10,” he said.

However, only protective agents from accredited agencies could escort individuals who are under actual threats and not members of the police force.
