A total of 384 firecracker-related injuries have been recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) as of late morning Friday, New Year’s Day.
At a press conference Friday, Health Secretary Janette Garin said the figure was 53 percent lower compared to last year’s recorded 814 injuries.
The figure, she said, is also 57 percent lower than the five-year recorded injuries from 2010 to 2014.
Of the 384 recorded injuries, 380 were due to fireworks and firecrackers while the four were hit by stray bullets.
Most of the firecracker injuries were due to piccolo with 219.
Most of the recorded injuries were recorded at the National Capital Region with 243 cases.
Of the 243, the City of Manila recorded 73 incidents or 30 percent followed by Quezon City with 46 injuries or 19 percent and Marikina with 28 injuries or 12 percent followed by Mandaluyong with 27 injuries or 11 percent and Valenzuela with 18 injuries or 7 percent.
The DOH said 244 or 64 percent of the victims are younger than 14 years old. RAM
