Senate resolution hails Pia Wurtzbach’s ‘positive attitude and determination’

Senate President Franklin Drilon filed a resolution on Tuesday congratulating and commending Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach for winning the prestigious 64th Miss Universe Pageant.

Drilon said Wurtzbach’s positive attitude and strong determination to fulfill her dream of winning the 2015 Miss Universe title “are indeed positive example and great inspiration to her countrymen, particularly the youth, that no dream is impossible as long as he or she put his or her heart and mind in it.”

“Her firm belief that being a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility to humanity as well as an opportunity to show the universe that she is confidently beautiful with a heart is a clear manifestation of her deep concern over the fate of her fellowmen,” his Senate Resolution 1698 reads.

“For winning the Miss Universe crown, which was last worn by a Filipina 42 years ago, she has brought great honor and glory to the country and the Filipino people worthy of the praise and commendation of this August chamber,” the resolution added.

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III also hailed Wurtzbach’s victory as the triumph of the Filipino’s “indomitable spirit, and her own dedication and dogged determination.”

Pimentel underscored, in particular, the strong resolve of Wurtzbach, who hails from Cagayan de Oro City, to make her childhood dream come true in a field of 79 other contestants who had vied for the crown following her victorious stint earlier to represent the country as Miss Philippines.

“It was destiny and determination because she had dreamed of the crown since childhood and after three attempts at the pageant. And suddenly the moment had come. She was just persevering and hard working,” he said in a statement.

Pimentel also praised the TV host/actress for her courage and confidence, saying her amazing victory amid the excitement and suspense of the contest which ended in a dramatic mix-up was a source of pride and inspiration for a nation long waiting for a Miss Universe title.

He said Wurtzbach’s “tremendous poise and grace displayed” in the middle of the mix-up before she was declared the rightful winner was a shining reaffirmation of her humility and her grace under pressure as she had gamely wore a big smile after being declared the first runner-up.

“But when the pageant’s host Steve Harvey corrected his own epic gaffe that the true winner was Miss Philippines and not Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez, Wurtzbach kept her poise before stepping forward to the cheers of the crowd and a stunned global television audience,” Pimentel further noted.
