Retired Associate Justice Florentino Feliciano passed away last Tuesday, the Supreme Court announced at a press conference Wednesday. He was 87.
“The Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court announce, with deep regret, the passing of its 115th member, the Honorable Florentino P. Feliciano,” high court’s Information Chief Theodore Te said at a press conference.
Justice Feliciano was appointed to the Supreme Court on Aug. 8, 1986 to Dec. 13, 1995.
Feliciano’s wake is at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.
The high court will hold a necrological service in his honor at 10a.m. on Dec. 18 at its session hall.
Feliciano graduated summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, then he graduated magna cum laude from UP law in 1952. He received his Master of Laws and juridical science degrees from Yale University and was a recipient of various recognition including the Carolinda Waters Prize in International Law.
Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Feliciano was part of the SyCip Salazar Feliciano & Hernandez.
He retired early from the Supreme Court to join the World Trade Organization.
From 1995 to 2001, he became a member of the Appellate Body of the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland then, from 2000 to February 2001, he chaired the appellate body of the WTO and then became a member of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal in 2002.
In 2003, he chaired the independent fact-finding commission that probed the “Magdalo” mutiny of 296 soldiers in Makati City.
