At least one person has been reported killed at the onslaught of Typhoon “Nona” (international name: Melor), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Tuesday.
The first casualty from Northern Samar was identified as Pascual Ausente, 31, who died from multiple lacerations after being hit by a flying roof.
Nona first made landfall in Northern Samar midday Monday. It made three more landfalls after in Bulusan, Sorsogon; Burias Island; and Banton, Romblon.
The typhoon evacuated 162,729 families or 733,150 persons from the regions of Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Bicol, Western and Eastern Visayas.
Nona cancelled dozens of domestic flights due to inclement weather. It also suspended classes in the regions of Calabarzon, Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
The typhoon dumped heavy rains, damaging roads and bridges and toppled power and communication lines in several provinces in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
The NDRRMC also reported 7,366 passengers and 75 vessels stranded in ports due to rough sea conditions.
