‘Nona’ slams Sorsogon, heads towards Burias Island

TYPHOON “Nona” (international name Melor) slammed Sorsogon Monday afternoon as it headed towards Burias Island, the state weather bureau said.

The typhoon’s second landfall was recorded at around 4 p.m. as Nona maintained its strength of 150 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph. Its first landfall was recorded in Batag, Northern Samar midday Monday.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, storm signals were raised in the following areas:

Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Southern Quezon, Marinduque and Romblon

Northern Samar

Batangas, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, rest of Quezon including Polillo Island, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island

VISAYAS:

Eastern Samar, Samar and Biliran

LUZON:

Metro Manila, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, Southern Zambales, Southern Aurora and Coron

VISAYAS:

Leyte, Northern Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Aklan, Capiz, Northern Antique, Northern Negros Occidental and Northern Iloilo

The typhoon canceled flights and suspended classes in different levels. Passengers were also stranded in ports due to bad weather.

Flashfloods and landslides are expected in areas under Signals No. 2 and 3. Storm surges of up to 3 meters are possible, Pagasa said.

Nona will cross Burias Island and will pass over Mindoro provinces Tuesday afternoon.

The typhoon moved at a pace of 17 kph and will exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday based on forecast models.
