Former MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino is urging authorities to investigate reports of the sudden acceleration of Montero SUVs, saying the public’s safety should be paramount.

Several Montero owners have reported incidents of the vehicle suddenly lurching that proved to be dangerous.

“The issue of the Sudden Unintended Acceleration of the Montero brand of car manufacturer Mitsubishi deserves a second or third look,” Tolentino
said.

He urged Mitsubishi Motors to give free checkups for vehicle owners to make sure of no faulty functions.

“Mitsubishi Motors, being a responsbble global car manufacturer, should ask owners of Montero SUVs to visit their dealers and have their vehicles
checked for free,” Tolentino urged.

“Issues such as the braking system and computer box should be thoroughly checked for free, and owners should have a guarantee that everything is in tip-top shape against any SUA. This is a win-win solution for the consumers and the car manufacturer itself, all in the name of public safety.”

Almost 100 Montero owners have filed complaints which could be the basis for a recall of the vehicles, according to the Department of Trade and  Industry.

Tolentino said Mitsubishi Motors should fully cooperate with the investigation as its name is at stake in the issue.

“If there are proven faults, Mitsubishi should be honest and apologize. Any sudden acceleration can lead to deaths and injuries,” he said.
