THE FORMER mayor and municipal treasurer of Sumisip, Basilan, have been indicted on multiple criminal charges in the Sandiganbayan over their alleged failure to remit the tax payments and insurance premiums of the municipal employees.
In a statement, the Office of the Ombudsman on Monday said ex-Mayor Haber Amin Asarul and former municipal treasurer Camlian Borjal failed to turn over the municipal personnel’s remittances to the Government Service Insurance System and Home Development Mutual Fund.
The antigraft body said the two officials also did not turn over to the national government the taxes deducted from the monthly salaries of the municipal employees.
Besides the filing of criminal charges, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales ordered the Commission on Audit in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to look into the cash accounts of Sumisip town from July 2007 to July 2009. Marlon Ramos
