BAGUIO CITY—Former Apayao Gov. Elias Bulut Sr., the man credited with leading the province since it was separated from Kalinga 20 years ago, died on Saturday from a lingering illness at a hospital in Metro Manila, reports gathered by the Inquirer from various sources showed.
Bulut, the incumbent mayor of Calanasan town, was 76.
Bulut sponsored the measure separating his province from the original Kalinga-Apayao in 1995, when he served as Kalinga-Apayao representative.
He was undergoing treatment in Metro Manila for months now, according to family sources who set up his wake at the St. Peter chapel in the Tandang Sora district of Quezon City. His relatives did not say what ailed the former governor.
The wake will continue until 5 p.m. today (Monday, Dec. 7), after which his remains will be taken to Mawanan Mountain Resort in Calanasan.
Bulut’s son, Elias Jr., is the incumbent governor of Apayao, while his daughter, Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, is the province’s House representative. Inquirer Northern Luzon
