Around 300 vehicles used for Apec added to HPG

More cars and motorcycles were added to the Highway Patrol Group’s (HPG) fleet of patrol vehicles, thanks to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit last month.

Over 300 cars and motorcycles used for the security of Apec and foreign delegates went to the HPG to enhance its capacity to conduct regular patrolling and to manage traffic on Edsa.

HPG director Chief Supt. Arnold Gunnacao said 211 motorcycles and 108 cars that were acquired and donated to the Philippine National Police (PNP) will go to the HPG.

Gunnacao said 70 of the 319 vehicles will be used by his men who are deployed on the 24-kilometer highway and its chokepoints.

And in each regional office of HPG, at least five vehicles from the donation will be given.

“We will bring some of the vehicles in the regions so in case there will be another engagement in other provinces,” said Gunnacao in an interview on Tuesday.

Last November, the PNP, through Department of Budget and Management, acquired 110 units of Toyota Altis for the transportation of the foreign delegates.

For the world leaders and their escorts, 200 units of BMW, a more expensive car brand, were used. But the luxury cars were only lent by the local distributor of BMW to the government security forces.
