TODAY is the 125th birth anniversary of former President Elpidio Quirino. Born in 1890, Quirino took over in 1948 from then President Manuel Roxas who died of a heart attack. In 1949, Quirino was elected President. The Independence Grandstand at Rizal Park in Manila was renamed Quirino Grandstand in his honor after he became the first President to hold his inauguration at the venue. Quirino died on Feb. 29, 1956 in Novaliches, Quezon City and his body was buried at the Manila South Cemetery. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
