Makati City deploys 600 traffic enforcers for APEC

MANILA, Philippines — As part of the security measures for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit this week, acting Makati Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña has ordered the deployment of 600 traffic enforcers, who will also help “provide security and manage traffic at the designated routes for APEC delegates within the city” since some of the hotels of the delegates are in Makati.
Peña said the 600 would augment the number of personnel on duty for the international event this week.

“Being the country’s financial center, Makati plays an important role in ensuring the overall success of the APEC Summit. We have the respected business leaders of Makati who will surely make significant contributions to the formulation of sound economic policies and strategies for the regional economic integration. For its part, the city government has put in place adequate measures to ensure the safety of the delegates, especially those who are billeted in Makati’s hotels,” Peña said in a statement.

The Makati hotels, which will host APEC delegates include the Makati Shangri-La, Fairmont, New World Hotel, Intercontinental Hotel, The Peninsula Manila, Dusit Thani and Raffles Makati.

Peña said the traffic enforcers would prevent unauthorized entry of vehicles on streets which would be closed for security reasons.

From Nov. 16 to 19, portions of West Street, North Street and Parkway Drive, located between Makati Avenue and Ayala Avenue, will be closed for the the entire day.

Meanwhile, the westbound lane of Ayala Avenue from Makati Avenue to Paseo de Roxas (along Tower One and Exchange Plaza) will be closed from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. until the 17th.

The city government advised motorists to take alternate routes to avoid getting stuck in traffic.  SFM
