At least 842 HPG officers to be deployed for Apec meet

Close to 1,000 personnel of the Philippine National Police’s Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) will be securing the convoy of the world economic leaders who will attend the four-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next week.

At least 842 HPG officers from different regions will be deployed to secure the convoy of the leaders and delegates from the 21 member-economies participating in the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting on Nov. 18 to 19.

“The primary duty of the HPG on the Apec week is the route and convoy security. We will be deploying 842 personnel all in all on Edsa (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue), and there will be more on Roxas Boulevard,” HPG spokesperson Supt. Grace Tamayo said on Tuesday.

Of the 842 men and women of HPG, 300 will augment the Presidential Security Group in guarding 20 world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Some 282 HPG personnel will join forces with the Police Security Protection Group for the security of ministers and other foreign delegates while around 227 will be deployed on Edsa where there will be special lanes for the Apec delegates.

In each convoy of the Apec leaders, Tamayo said there would be four motorcycles and two mobile patrol cars from HPG apart from the security vehicles from other security agencies.

In the coming days, Tamayo said the HPG would send more officers on Roxas Boulevard, at Mall of Asia Arena and the Apec venue in Philippine International Convention Center as well as at the hotels where the guests were staying.
